'Without Mexicans, it would be like a day without sunshine," Shami declares

The two Democratic candidates for governor discussed issues ranging from the death penalty to immigration in their sole debate Monday night, 1200 WOAI news reports.

Houston hair care products millionaire Farouk Shami said he would support tearing down the wall which has been built along the Texas-Mexico border and building more bridges.

"Without Mexicans, it would be like a day without sunshine in our state," Shami said.

Former Houston Mayor Bill White said there should be more input form border communities when it comes to making immigration policy.

"It can't be a matter of symbolism," White said.  "Are people making policy in Austin or in DC, without getting input from the people in those communities."

Shami said he favors a moratorium on the death penalty in Texas.

"We cannot be bragging how many people we execute, and execute them innocently," Shami said.

White said he doesn't agree with the state's pace of executions, but he does not support a moratorium.

"Because that would disrespect the juries, and the victims, and criminal justice in cases where there is no question," he said.

Shami also called for an increase in the gasoline tax to fund more highway construction, something White said he doesn't support.

The winner in the March 2 Democratic primary will face Kay Bailey Hutchison, Rick Perry, or Debra Medina in the November general election.
